Throughout Dave Eggers’ extraordinary novel The Circle, many themes play conform in the interpretation and portrayal of the story. However, the theme of privacy rises above all others to be the main theme in the story. Through the examples of privacy within the novel such as the countless number of cameras and the completely glass workplace, lessons can be learned about the importance of privacy both individually as well as in terms of a society. Additionally, once the examples of privacy are identified, different opinions can be formed on the level of importance privacy should hold within an everyday human life as well as within society itself as a whole. Through Mae’s story we come to find that personal privacy is essential in order for people to be individuals as opposed to being exactly like one another, as well as the importance personal privacy holds when it comes to members of society functioning well with each other and growing as people. As well as analyzing Th e Circle in terms of privacy and the boundaries of privacy that should be implemented within a society, we also compare and contrasted The Circle with the United States Government today in terms of privacy.
